Pre-Authorization holds on Debit Cards

Some merchants can place an authorization hold in order to determine that there are funds available to cover the transaction. Typically these holds can last 1-5 business days and should fall off once the purchase has settled.

When using the debit card to purchase gas at a gas station, it is common that a hold of up to $100 can be placed on the card for 1-5 days (in addition to the price you paid for gas.) The reason being, is because the merchant doesn't know how much gas you will be buying at the time of the purchase, so they conservatively authorize for a full tank.
